A robust week of lunar and interplanetary discussion starts with the 6th NASA SSERVI Exploration Science Forum, set to occur July 23-25, preceded by 10th annual Lunar and Small Bodies Graduate Forum (LunGradCon) on July 22 – both events are to be held at Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California. Concurrently, Caltech is hosting 9th International Conference on Mars July 23-25, followed by 37th Mars Exploration Program Analysis Group (MEPAG) at its Pasadena Campus. These annual meetings are especially timely given the USA Moon to Mars initiative, Artemis 2024 program and recent comments by NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, “I am not willing to rule out 2033 at all” regarding a crewed Mars mission, continuing “given the fact that we have accelerated our path to the Moon… does that accelerate our path to Mars?”. Beyond Mars, national space programs of USA, Europe and China are increasingly setting sights further: to Solar System planetary mass-center Jupiter and its dynamic moons. Juno, an American probe, is currently in orbit around Jupiter, and Europa Clipper, a planned mission to explore the ice encrusted Europa, is expected to launch 2023. ESA’s JUpiter ICy moons Explorer (JUICE) is also expected to launch in 2023 to explore the Galileo moons, and China has announced its intention to reach Jupiter, with Yang Yuguang of CASIC stating, “Jupiter …may serve as a springboard for human exploration of the space outside the solar system”. Southeast Asia Hosts 16th AOGS in Singapore, 6 IconSpace in Malaysia, 7th Vietnam Summer School
The 16th Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS) meeting is set for July 28 – August 2 in Singapore to promote geosciences, specifically in Asia and Oceania. The conference will feature 8 sciences sections, subsection talks, poster viewings and distinguished lectures. Some prominent speakers are (L-R) Philip Li-Fan Liu from National University of Singapore, Andrew Roberts from Australian National University, and Wenjiao Xiao from Chinese Academy of Sciences. The 6th International Conference on Space Science and Communication (IconSpace 2019) July 28-30 with theme ‘Advancing Space Science for Societal Sustainability’ is being held in Johor, Malaysia and sponsored by ANGKASA, UKM and IEEE. 5 Keynotes will be given by representatives from UTM, Kyutech Japan, Covenant University Nigeria, USDA and National Institute of Aeronautics and Space of Indonesia (LAPAN). The 7th Vietnam Summer School of Science is being held July 22-25 at Quy Nhon. The nonprofit organization teaches science and professional skills for young people in Vietnam. Among other space / science education and enterprise efforts in Southeast Asia are National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT), Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF), Singapore Space and Technology Association (SSTA), Vietnam National Space Center (VNSC) and its 2018 telescope at Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park – the second space observatory after the one built in Nha Trang in September 2017.
