SUMMARY:Live Online Chat with Astronaut José Hernández
DESCRIPTION:Mexican-American engineer and NASA Astronaut José Hernández has a life story of perseverance. 18:00-19:00 EDT | 22:00-23:00 UTC | 12:00-13:00 HST. Born in 1962 to migrant farmworker parents\, he spent his early years working in the fields and learned English at age 12. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from the University of the Pacific and a Master of Science in electrical and computer engineering from the University of California\, Santa Barbara. \nHernández built a career at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory\, where he contributed to developing one of the first full-field digital mammography imaging systems\, aiding in the early detection of breast cancer. After several setbacks\, he was selected as a NASA Astronaut in 2004 and flew on Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-128) in 2009. \nFollowing his time at NASA\, Hernández became an entrepreneur and public figure\, inspiring others through his journey from farmworker to space traveler—later chronicled in his memoir and the 2023 film A Million Miles Away. \nNo cost but registration required.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Overlap - Multi-actor simulation of lunar ground missions
DESCRIPTION:11:00 EDT featuring Vic Paulson\, discussing her work on Designated Lunar Areas (DLAs) and Overlap\, a digital simulation sandbox for testing DLA governance regimes at the lunar south pole. \nAlthough the lunar activity accelerates\, the governance frameworks being written for surface coordination today have never been tested against the conditions they will face. Multiple actors\, incompatible frameworks\, high-value terrain\, and no enforcement authority are the operational realities that proposed DLA rules are poised to tackle. Without empirical data on how real stakeholders behave under governance pressure\, those frameworks rest on assumptions. \nOverlap addresses this directly. Players take on the roles of real lunar actor types like national blocs\, commercial operators\, and emerging space states\, and make asset deployment and resource extraction decisions under different DLA governance configurations. Every move is automatically logged\, while a facilitator captures not just what players decide\, but the reasoning behind each decision in real time. Overlap aims to generate behavioral data on how governance rules perform under pressure\, where informal workarounds emerge\, where infrastructure is beneficial to share\, and which actor types are most likely to establish a foothold. The simulation is specifically designed to surface the gap between stated positions and actual behavior. \n\nVic Paulson is a PhD student in Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech\, where her research spans space governance\, in-situ resource utilization\, and the policy dimensions of lunar resource development. Her engineering background grounds the simulation logic in the operational inputs like asset classes\, surface constraints\, resource dependencies\, that governance frameworks will ultimately have to contend with. \n\nJoin us for a discussion on what behavioral data from real stakeholders can tell us about how DLA governance frameworks actually hold up when theory meets the surface.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Lunar Ledger | First Dataset Release
DESCRIPTION:Join Open Lunar Foundation\, JAOPS/Dymon\, and COSPAR for a milestone event marking the release of the first mission dataset on the Lunar Ledger platform. \nThis webinar introduces the first lunar mission dataset to be made publicly accessible through Lunar Ledger\, featuring data from the YAOKI rover mission flown aboard Intuitive Machines Mission 2. The release represents an important step toward a more open and collaborative future for lunar exploration. \nParticipants will hear directly from the teams responsible for collecting\, curating\, and utilising the data. The session will showcase early mission imagery and telemetry\, explore lessons learned from the YAOKI mission\, and discuss how accessible lunar datasets can support scientific research\, technological development\, and international collaboration. \nThe conversation will bring together mission operators\, data scientists\, and members of the scientific community to examine a central question: \n\nHow can open data sharing enable the future of lunar exploration and science? \n\nSpeakers\nOpen Lunar Foundation \n\n\nRachel Williams\, Executive Director \n\n\nLunar Ledger Lead \n\n\nZack Gainsforth\, Lunar Ledger Data Scientist \n\n\nJAOPS / Dymon \n\n\nShinichiro Nakajima\, CEO\, Dymon \n\n\nAlejandro Sela\, CEO\, JAOPS \n\n\nLouis Burtz\, JAOPS \n\n\nCOSPAR \n\n\nAthena Coustenis\, Chair\, COSPAR Panel on Planetary Protection

SUMMARY:Committee on Planetary Protection (CoPP) Online Meeting: Limits of Terrestrial Life and the Probability of Growth on Mars
DESCRIPTION:This meeting is to provide information to NASA so it can develop a prioritized list of factors that contribute to the potential release of terrestrial bioburden on the Mars surface and the likelihood of microbial survival and replication. Quantitative and qualitative guidance on individual and multiple growth-limiting/growth-promoting conditions are needed to advance the analysis of planetary protection approaches that enable the search for evidence of life on Mars. Key factors identified during this meeting will assist in modeling the probability of survival and growth of terrestrial organisms in planning for future human and robotic missions to Mars. \nThe meeting participants will consider: \n\nCurrent knowledge about microbial persistence and survival in terrestrial\, human inhabited\, contained environments and control factors used to limit microbial contamination. Considerations will include microbial containment\, aseptic controls\, and sterilization/containment methodologies. Current knowledge of environmental contamination in analogue martian habitats and previous or existing space missions will be discussed.\nCurrent knowledge about the limits of microbiological growth and survival with a focus on studies that address the probability of survival and growth under known Martian conditions (e.g.\, nutrient availability\, high radiation\, low water activity\, extreme oxides\, cold temperatures\, presence/absence of methane).\nIdentification and prioritization of research gaps for understanding the risk of survival and growth of terrestrial microorganisms on the Martian surface and shallow subsurface.\n\nMeeting deliverables will include: a closing discussion on the prioritization of the topics raised during the meeting\, proposals for additional research that may be required to develop a probabilistic risk assessment model for terrestrial microbial survival/growth on the Martian surface\, and active dialogue on the next proposed steps. \nCall for Speakers and Topics: https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/019cc53072c57cd7a42e995bf1cfa751

SUMMARY:Talk: Telescopes on the Moon\, the Future of Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Joe Silk to discuss the Moon as the next great frontier for astronomy. Terrestrial telescopes are facing a crisis as our night skies become increasingly crowded and bright. The solution? Looking upward—and staying there. \nJoin IAU Commission C2 (Communicating Astronomy with the Public) on 19 May 2026 for a fascinating talk by the world-renowned Prof. Joseph Silk (Johns Hopkins / Oxford / CNRS). We won’t just be talking about lunar missions; we’ll be exploring how the Moon’s surface offers a unique sanctuary for the future of science. From the radio-quiet “Far Side” probing the Dark Ages of the universe to optical interferometers searching for biological tracers on Earth-like exoplanets\, the Moon is about to become our most important laboratory.Key Highlights:The Dark Ages: Probing the universe 50 million years after the Big Bang.Gravitational Waves: Capturing the history of merging massive black holes. Are We Alone? Using ultrahigh resolution to image nearby exoplanets.
