OSC Commercial Resupply Mission 4 to Launch While Boeing and SpaceX CCtCap in Progress
The third Orbital Sciences Corp commercial resupply mission ORB-3 carrying ~2,290 kg of cargo and crew supplies to the International Space Station is set to launch October 27 at 18:44 EDT from Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) Pad 0A at Wallops Flight Facility VA. Its rendezvous and berthing with grapple from Canadarm2, operated by Expedition 41 Reid Wiseman and Barry Wilmore, is planned for 04:58 EST on November 2. Cygnus will remain docked until December 3 when it will depart and burn up in Earth atmosphere filled with waste during reentry. At the end of the mission OSC will be halfway complete with its US$1.9B / 8-mission Commercial Resupply Contract (CRS) with NASA and will have delivered total of 6,078 kg of essential cargo / disposed of 6,097 kg of waste. Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (CCtCap) contracts have been awarded to Boeing Co ($4.2B) and SpaceX ($2.6B). Europe Space Hubs Strasbourg and Noordwijk Host Conferences
The Space Exploration International Conference takes place October 29-31 hosted by ASTech and ISU at the Park of Innovation in Strasbourg, France. The objective is to address technical, scientific and programmatic challenges of exploration at an international level, and review the Global Exploration Roadmap of the International Space Exploration Coordination Group. The Program Committee is lead by François Spiero of CNES and Bernhard Hufenbach of ESA with participation of representatives from Government, Industry and Academia including Alain Ouellet of CSA, Rodrigo da Costa of Airbus, and Walter Peeters of ISU. The 2014 IEEE International Conference on Wireless for Space and Extreme Environments is in Noordwijk, The Netherlands on Oct 30-31 organized by ESA / ESTEC in cooperation with CSA and NASA. This represents an effort to understand and solve the emerging problems facing wireless sensing and communication in space and related extreme environments: extreme hot or cold locations, extreme high- or low-pressure enclosures, critical control loops, high-speed rotating equipment and other diverse challenges. A Keynote speaker at this event is Don Cornwell, Director of the Technology and Optical Communications Division within the Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) program at NASA HQ.
