Reaching 21 years of continuous occupation November 2, ISS legacy equipment maintenance beyond 2024-28 is questioned as Artemis / others should then be landing humans on Moon, developing lunar bases and cislunar gateway. Tiangong Space Station Shenzhou 12 Taikonauts are approaching 90 days in space Sep 17 – setting the record for China’s longest-ever human spaceflight mission. Tianzhou-3 cargo craft at Wenchang, Hainan Island is being readied to launch aboard Long March 7. Shenzhou 13 three-member crew may launch October 3 for a 6-month mission. Now 5+ years at ISS, Bigelow BEAM inflatable module continues being tested through 2028. Bigelow proposed XBASE 330 could attach to ISS or be a solo habitat housing 6 people. ISRO Forges Ahead with Human Spaceflight, Commercial Launch Services, Lunar Science
Quality control and material improvements will be focus of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III manufacturing process as preparations for human-rating continue, ISRO Chairman Sivan states. GSLV Mk3 has a strong track record (4 successful launches, 3 orbital) in contrast to GSLV Mk2 with problematic cryogenic stage, and is expected to place 2 Indian Data Relay System Satellites in ~36,000 km GEO during separate uncrewed Gaganyaan spacecraft orbital demonstration flights beginning NET June 2022 ahead of crewed missions 2023, which may secure India’s place in history as 4th nation to develop indigenous space access. Gaganyaan demonstration service module is on track, firing 450 seconds, and future crewmembers from Indian Air Force are soon headed back to Russia for spacesuit fitting. GSLV Mk3 is also sending Chandrayaan-3 (lander/ rover) to the Moon surface Q3 2022, utilizing the existent Chandrayaan-2 orbiter still collecting science data from Lunar orbit, information India is offering to share with the international scientific community (see Announcement of Opportunity). As a follow up to current Mars mission Mangalyaan, the MOM-2 orbiter may launch 2024. Commercially, New Space India Limited is deliberating between 3 applicants who are pursuing licensing for independent construction and use of PSLV. 3-stage solid rocket Small Satellite Launch Vehicle is also expected to begin operations by the end of this year, which is aimed at business use.
