SUMMARY:2026 International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC)
DESCRIPTION:IREC isn’t just a competition\, it’s a launchpad for innovation and careers. This year\, 175 teams have successfully applied and been accepted to participate in the 2026 IREC — to push the limits of high-powered rocketry\, applying classroom theory to real-world engineering challenges\, and break new IREC records! \nThe Experimental Sounding Rocket Association (ESRA) is a non-profit organization founded in 2003 for the purpose of fostering and promoting engineering knowledge and experience in the field of rocketry. ESRA’s mission is to provide safe and exciting opportunities for academic groups to compete in aerospace challenges. \nIn 2006\, ESRA established the International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) which has since grown from a handful of U.S. based collegiate teams to welcoming 150+ collegiate teams from ~22 countries on 6 different continents. During the IREC each team designs\, builds\, tests and launches rockets with a payload size >2kg and target altitudes of 3\,000 to 30\,000 meters. Rockets are typically 10 to 20 centimeters in diameter and 2.5 to 6 meters long. Multi-stage rockets and all chemical propulsion types (solid\, liquid and hybrid) are allowed.

SUMMARY:Spacecraft Rendezvous and Proximity Operations
DESCRIPTION:Online short course on Rendezvous and Proximity Operations (RPO)\, critical for crew transfer\, in-space assembly and space debris removal\, among other uses. Instructor is Pradipto Ghosh; 12 classroom hours / 2.4 CEU-PDH; online via Zoom with replays available. Students will receive Certificates of Completion from both AIAA and Johns Hopkins University. \nTopics covered include RPO Concept of Operations (ConOps)\, relative orbit design\, maneuver calculation\, and elements of navigation. The objectives of this course are to develop the general principles governing spacecraft proximity operations\, rendezvous\, and docking. Students will be introduced to topics such as near and far range rendezvous\, natural motion circumnavigation\, safe relative motion\, phasing\, and rendezvous trajectory design. After completing this six-week course\, students will be able to conceptualize the operations of rendezvous and prox-ops missions such as the International Space Station (ISS) resupply\, crew transfer\, extra-vehicular activities\, and on-orbit assembly/refueling. A basic knowledge of Newtonian Mechanics and Ordinary Differential Equations is expected.

DESCRIPTION:Through May 11\, Four instructors convene this class because current USA / international / commercial mission plans\, both crewed and uncrewed\, will be challenged by multiple new hurdles\, including regulatory\, habitat\, mining\, and navigation and positioning. This course aims to present a few key challenges related to the return to the Moon and beyond that are often sidelined. It is intended for students and professionals seeking to understand select challenges of the new space era and what the return to the Moon truly entails. DESCRIPTION:Through May 14\, this course will demystify the space weather topic\, new to many people\, as it affects a wide variety of space systems. All sessions will be recorded and available for replay; course notes will be available for download. \nInstructor Joseph Comberiate is also course developer for the ‘Space Weather and Space Systems’ graduate course at Johns Hopkins University. He is the Group Supervisor of the Space Algorithms and Technologies group at JHU Applied Physics Lab\, where he has worked since receiving his Ph.D. in 2006 in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His dissertation focused on tomographic reconstruction of ionospheric electron density using space-based ultraviolet observations. He also holds M.S. and B.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from University of Illinois. \nBetween lectures during the course\, the instructor will be available via email for technical questions and comments. \nThis new essential course\, in partnership with Johns Hopkins University\, explores the space environment in the context of its impact on space system operations. \nStudents will receive an AIAA Certificate of Completion and an additional Certificate of Completion from Johns Hopkins University at the end of the course. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Goddard: Celebrating 100 Years Since Launch of 1st Liquid-Fueled Rocket
DESCRIPTION:“Tried rocket at 2:30\,” Robert Hutchings Goddard recounted in his diary on that frosty afternoon in 1926 at “Aunt Effie’s farm” in Auburn\, Massachusetts. “It rose 41 ft\, and went 184 ft\, in 2.5 sec\, after the lower half of nozzle has burned off\,” he wrote. \n\n\n\nGoddard’s March 16th experiment marked “the first flight with a rocket using liquid propellants\,” as the physicist and inventor recorded matter-of-factly the following day. \nOn 16 March\, at the appointed hour\, 100 rockets will be sent aloft where Goddard made history – part of a series of commemorative events that AIAA is supporting that are designed to inspire a new generation of students to embrace STEM. \nThe launch area in Auburn is now on the 9th fairway of the Pakachoag Golf Course\, a National Historic landmark where an engraved obelisk dedicated by AIAA in 2006 marks the dawn of the rocket age. \n“We were honored to place the obelisk at the location of Dr. Goddard’s achievement\,” said Merrie Scott\, AIAA Senior Vice President of Membership Engagement. “He served as a director of the America Rocket Society\, which is one of the predecessor organizations to AIAA. His legacy has become part of AIAA history.” \nOther model rocket launches are expected by rocket clubs\, school students\, and space enthusiasts around the country on the anniversary. \n“My premise has always been that as great as it is to celebrate something that happened 100 years ago\, it’s really a celebration of the genius of humanity\,” said Charles Slatkin\, executive director of the Wonder Mission\, a nonprofit that acquired and renovated Goddard’s birthplace in Worcester\, Massachusetts\, with the mission of inspiring the next generation of scientists\, engineers\, educators\, innovators\, and what he calls “visioneers.” In addition to the rocket launched\, Slatkin is coordinating a series of centennial events in March\, including a festival and rededication with the city of Auburn at Goddard Park and tours of Goddard’s home. \nSee other Goddard Centennial events here: https://firstlaunchcentennial.org/ \nOn 18 March\, AIAA President Dan Hastings will participate in a discussion at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on the legacy of Goddard (Class of 1908) and on 22 March he will participate in a 100th anniversary event at Worcester’s Hanover Theater. \nThe Goddard centennial is “a celebration of all of these innovators and dreamers and engineers and educators who work tirelessly and don’t get a lot of attention\,” said Slatkin. “We have gone from Goddard to interstellar space in just 100 years. Leyva\, Ph.D.\, P.E. \nAssociate Dean for Research\, Fort Worth Campus\, College of Engineering Arthur McFarland Professor·Texas A&M Fort Worth \n\nIvett A. Leyva became the Associate Dean for Research at the new Texas A&M Fort Worth campus in August 2025. She is tasked with starting a new engineering research enterprise in this new campus. She was head of the Department of Aerospace Engineering from 2021 to 2025. Previously\, she worked at the Air Force for 15 years. For 6 years\, she was the program officer for Hypersonic Aerodynamics at the Air Force Office of Scientific Research\, Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) and prior to that she was a researcher at the AFRL Rocket Lab working on liquid rocket instabilities. Her technical expertise is in hypersonic aerodynamics and liquid rocket engines. Ivett holds a bachelor’s\, master’s and doctoral degree from Caltech. Her Ph.D. was in Aeronautics. Ivett has six patents and has authored numerous papers and two book chapters. She is a fellow of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics\, the Royal Aeronautical Society\, and the Air Force Research Laboratory. She is a National Associate of the National Research Council of the National Academies\, and a recipient of a Civilian Achievement Medal and two meritorious Civilian Service Awards and Medals from the Air Force. \nSee More \nThe Mary Jackson Named Lecture is given in honor of Mary Jackson (1921–2005)\, who became the first black female aerospace engineer at NASA in 1958.
