These reforms will clarify the scope of Commission actions subject to environmental review and streamline and expedite the review process to ensure NEPA serves as a tool for informed decision-making rather than a barrier to investment\, innovation\, and connectivity. (WT Docket No. 25-217)\nUnlocking Satellite Spectrum Abundance The Commission will consider a Report and Order and Order of Proposed Modification and two Further Notices of Proposed Rulemaking that would increase the amount of spectrum available in order to support innovation in the American space economy. The Order would unlock more than 1\,000 megahertz of spectrum in the 12.7 GHz and 42 GHz bands to provide greater capacity for satellite broadband to the home or for in-flight connectivity and the like. One FNPRM would seek comment on unlocking an additional 1\,175 megahertz of spectrum in the Ku- and Ka-bands and 138.25 gigahertz in the D-band for more intensive use by satellite communications. The other FNPRM would seek comment on three new bands across thousands of megahertz that might be able to be used to control spacecraft or to provide data communications in support of emergent space activities\, such as in-space servicing\, assembly\, and manufacturing. (SB Docket Nos. 25-180\, 26-54; GN Docket Nos. 14-77\, 22-352; WT Docket No. 23-158)\nUnleashing the Power of Unlicensed UWB Devices  The Commission will consider a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would modernize the rules for unlicensed Ultra-Wideband (UWB) devices. UWB devices operate under part 15 of the Commission’s rules and support a wide variety of applications\, including automobile sensors\, door locks\, ground- and wall-penetrating radars\, and location tracking for NFL players during games. The NPRM would modernize the UWB rules by updating definitions\, measurement procedures\, technical parameters\, and outdated restrictions\, while removing unnecessary coordination requirements. The NPRM would also create a new UWB device category for emerging applications like AI-enabled sensing\, and overall seek to future-proof UWB regulations for the next wave of innovation while maintaining protections for incumbent services. (ET Docket No. 26-245)\nModernizing the 911 Framework – The Commission will consider a Notice of Inquiry exploring modernization of the 911 framework to ensure the public can continue to effectively and reliably access emergency services in this era of rapid technological change. DESCRIPTION:In 1957 the Soviet Union launched the Sputnik 1 mission which became the first artificial Earth satellite and launched humankind into the Space Age. It was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union on 4 October. \n\n\n\nSize and Weight: It was a metal sphere about 23 inches (58 cm) wide\, roughly the size of a beach ball\, and weighed 184 pounds (83.6 kg).\n\n\n\n\nOrbit Time: It took about 96 to 98 minutes to complete one full trip around the Earth.\n\n\n\n\nMission: It sent simple radio beep signals back to Earth for three weeks before its batteries died.\n\n\n\n\nEnd of Life: It stayed in orbit for three months and burned up when it fell back into Earth’s atmosphere on January 4\, 1958.

DESCRIPTION:Lunar Surface Science Workshop (LSSW) will feature the public release of data from the most recent observations of the lunar farside by the Artemis II crew. The Artemis II mission successfully returned humans to the lunar vicinity in the first time in over 53 years. Crew members Reid Wiseman\, Victor Glover\, Christina Koch\, and Jeremy Hanson made observations of the Moon\, Earth\, and experienced a solar eclipse during the lunar flyby. The LSSW will include a rollout of data findings by the Lunar Science Team. Participants will be briefed on the publicly available reports\, planned for release on October 7 to coincide with this LSSW\, and Planetary Data System products. The Lunar Science Team will be available to respond to questions.

Try your hand on a simulated space mission at Las Cruces’ Challenger Learning Center and peruse New Mexico’s space history at the New Mexico Museum of Space History. \nApproximate itinerary (subject to change due to availability and weather): Oct. 15: Arrive and stay at Best Western El Paso Airport Entrada Hotel or Wyndham El Paso Airport Hotel and Water Park; informal meet and greet at the Wyndham hotel bar. Oct. 16: Challenger Learning Center\, Spaceport America and Virgin Galactic. Oct. 17: Museum of Space History\, Carrizozo Lava Flow\, White Sands National Park\, Dinner at Casa El Camino. Oct. 18: Kilbourne Hole\, Aden Crater and/or Challenger Learning Center. Oct. 19: Depart for home. Note that the Aden Crater visit is the only stop with any degree of strenuous walking or hiking\, which involves about 2 miles total of walking on rough terrain.
