SUMMARY:Psyche Spacecraft Uses Mars for Gravity Assist
DESCRIPTION:On its way to the asteroid Psyche\, the Psyche spacecraft will pass within 4\,500 km of Mars and will harness the planet’s gravitational pull to speed up and adjust its trajectory toward the metal-rich asteroid. The spacecraft was launched October 13\, 2023\, and by August 2029\, the spacecraft will begin to orbit the 173-mile-wide (279-kilometer-wide) asteroid – the only metal-class asteroid ever to be explored. Because of Psyche’s high iron-nickel metal content\, scientists think it may be the partial core of a planetesimal\, a building block of an early planet. The goal is a 26-month science investigation. https://www.nasa.gov/news-release/nasas-psyche-spacecraft-optical-comms-demo-en-route-to-asteroid/

SUMMARY:IAU Symposium 405: Traversing the Galactic Center in Space and Time
DESCRIPTION:Galactic Center of the Milky Way is instrumental in mapping and understanding galaxies since it is the closest galactic nucleus to us. At Brno Observatory and Planetarium\, Kraví hora 522/2. \nDespite many detailed\, multiwavelength studies of the central regions of our Galaxy\, we still have many open questions concerning its history and future evolution. This symposium will bring together experts working on both observational and theoretical studies of the Galactic Center so that they can “traverse” this exciting region and look at details of its past processes and potential future. We will explore the remarkable progress made since the last major meeting of the community—the Galactic Center Workshop in Granada\, April 24–28\, 2023. We will examine exciting new results\, including those from JWST and GRAVITY/ERIS at the VLT\, as well as insights from ALMA and MeerKAT.
