SUMMARY:NASA news conference on the Artemis II Moon mission
DESCRIPTION:NASA to preview Artemis II Moon Mission 11:00 EDT . \nNews conference on the science and technology of Artemis II mission starts at 13:00. \nArtemis II slated for no later than April 2026. The test flight\, a launch of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket and Orion spacecraft\, will send NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman\, Victor Glover\, and Christina Koch\, along with CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen\, on an approximately 10-day mission around the Moon. \nThe mission will help confirm the systems and hardware needed for human deep space exploration. This mission is the first crewed flight under NASA’s Artemis campaign and is another step toward new U.S.-crewed missions on the Moon’s surface that will help the agency prepare to send American astronauts to Mars.

SUMMARY:Former NASA Astronaut Jose Hernandez Speaks at University of North Dakota
DESCRIPTION:Jose Hernandez\, a former NASA astronaut with an extraordinary\, only-in-America story\, will visit UND on Wednesday\, Sept. 17. The campus community is invited to join him for a guided conversation that afternoon as part of the Hilyard Center’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Hernandez will be at the Memorial Union ballroom for a talk from 3 to 4 p.m. followed by a meet-and-greet. \nHe will also visit the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences to sign the NASA space capsule displayed on campus. \nHernandez currently serves as CEO of Stockton\, Calif.-based engineering consultancy Tierra Luna Engineering\, serves on the University of California Board of Regents and is a 2016 recipient of the National Hispanic Hero Award presented by the U.S. Hispanic Leadership Institute. His journey as the first migrant farmworker to become an American astronaut served as the inspiration for the 2023 film “A Million Miles Away\,” starring Michael Pena as Hernandez. \nFollowing 11 separate applications to join NASA\, Hernandez became a materials research engineer in the agency’s Materials & Processes Branch in 2001. From 2002 to 2004\, he served as branch chief. Hernandez was selected as part of NASA’s 19th class of astronauts in 2004\, and he completed astronaut candidate training in 2006. In 2009\, he served on the STS-128 Discovery mission to the International Space Station. It was the 128th shuttle mission and the 30th mission to the ISS. Spending nearly 14 days in space\, Hernandez helped rotate an expedition crew member\, attached a new module and transferred more than 18\,000 pounds of supplies and equipment to the station. His crew also conducted three spacewalks in its 217 orbits of the Earth and 5.7 million miles traveled\, according to Hernandez’s NASA biography. Hernandez left NASA in 2011. \nRaised as one of four kids in a migrant farming family from Mexico\, Hernandez grew up traveling through California\, hand-picking crops. He knew at an early age that he wanted to become an astronaut\, according to a biography on his Reaching for the Stars Foundation website. “I was hoeing a row of sugar beets in a field near Stockton\, and I heard on my transistor radio that Franklin Chang-Diaz had been selected for the Astronaut Corps\,” he said. “I was already interested in science and engineering\, but that was the moment I said\, ‘I want to fly in space.’” At the University of the Pacific in Stockton\, he earned a degree in electrical engineering in 1984 and received a full scholarship to further study engineering at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. In 1987\, he accepted a position at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore\, Calif.\, where he worked until 2001. He served as an electronics engineer\, helping to develop the first full-field digital mammography imaging system\, which is used to detect breast cancer. \nAccording to his NASA biography\, Hernandez also served as program manager for the Office of International Material Protection and Emergency Cooperation\, representing the Livermore Lab. In this role\, he worked with the U.S. Department of Energy in coordinating nuclear non-proliferation initiatives between the United States and the Russian Federation. Since leaving NASA\, Hernandez served as executive director of strategic operations at MEI Technologies (now known as Aegis Aerospace)\, which specializes in space systems engineering\, simulation and production. In 2012\, he ran for Congress in California’s 10th Congressional District. From 2013 to 2016\, Hernandez was president of Pt Strategies at private equity firm Pt Capital.

SUMMARY:"Save NASA" at NASA Headquarters in Washington DC\, 300 E St SW\, Mary W Jackson Building
DESCRIPTION:Expected speakers include: \n\nRep. Suhas Subramanyam\, VA-10 – House Cmte on Space\, Science\, and Technology\nMonica Gorman\, Area Vice President\, Goddard Engineers\, Scientists and Technicians Association (GESTA) – Union representing Goddard technical civil servants\nColette Delwalla\, Executive Director\, Stand Up For Science\nDr. Mollie Manier\, National Institutes of Health\, signer of the Bethesda Declaration\nMatthew Biggs\, President\, International Federation of Professional & Technical Engineers (IFPTE) – National body for GESTA\n\nWe’re fighting for science\, engineering\, and exploration.\nTell Congress to push back on the 2025 Presidential Budget Request that\ncuts NASA Science by 47%\, STEM education by 100%\, and\nNASA’s full budget by 25%! \n\nThis event is being organized as a one-off by a collection of people who love NASA and are watching it be cut to pieces. Because the harm is happening now\, with more coming almost every day\, we didn’t really have time to do everything the “right” way\, such as by forming a named group with a proper website\, or partnering with well-known organizations. The people organizing this protest are just folks who jumped in to hold a protest\, because we think that NASA won’t be the same if we don’t act now. \nWe are a peaceful protest group\, and we stand in solidarity with other scientific advocacy groups. \nCurrent NASA leadership is already acting on the President’s and OMB’s proposed budget by beginning to greatly reduce the number of civil servants and contractors\, which will be detrimental to the mission of this Agency.  Cuts to NASA’s science budget will drastically hinder NASA’s ability to produce science from current and future missions.  To win the Space Race to the Moon\, NASA was prioritized and appropriated $68 billion in 1965 alone (adjusted for inflation). In 2026\, with goals to reach Mars\, NASA’s proposed budget is only $18.8 billion. Some of the cuts to NASA science involve turning off spacecraft that are already in space and actively sending back data.  NASA contributes to agriculture\, weather predictions\, and safety.  Without NASA Earth science\, early detection for natural disasters and forecasting would be imprecise and difficult.  \nWe understand that the lack of a well-established\, persistent group is off-putting. If you would rather not join this protest then there are still ways you can help. Please absolutely flood your representatives in Congress with pleas to save NASA. When you do\, drive home the point that the cuts are happening now! Most of Congress seems to think that they will save NASA if they work out a budget for the coming fiscal year that funds NASA at previous levels. They don’t realize that NASA’s acting administrator\, under pressure from the White House\, OMB\, and DOGE\, are enacting “realignments” and cuts now. So please please please tell Congress that every day our nation is losing dedicated and brilliant career civil servants\, contractors\, and programs\, that NASA is being fed into the woodchipper now. Congress must act immediately to save NASA\, not wait for October 1! \nAnd thank you.
