SUMMARY:30th Annual Design / Build / Fly Competition
DESCRIPTION:Applied Aerodynamics\, Aircraft Design\, Design Engineering and Flight Test Technical Committees of AIAA all pitch in to call forth enthusiastic creativity from the next generation. \nCollege-student teams will design\, fabricate\, and demonstrate the flight capabilities of an unmanned\, electric powered\, radio-controlled aircraft which can best meet the specified mission profile. The goal is a balanced design possessing good demonstrated flight handling qualities and practical and affordable manufacturing requirements while providing a high vehicle performance. \nTo encourage innovation and maintain a fresh design challenge for each year’s participants\, the design requirements and performance objective are updated yearly\, providing new design requirements and opportunities while allowing application of technology developed by teams from prior years.

SUMMARY:From Earth to the Universe: At Robinson Planetarium
DESCRIPTION:In honor of Astronomy Month\, celebrated around the Earth\, this full-dome planetarium program takes the audience out to the colorful birthplaces and burial grounds of stars\, and still further out beyond the Milky Way to the unimaginable immensity of myriad galaxies. Along the way\, the audience will learn about the history of astronomy\, the invention of the telescope\, and today’s giant telescopes that allow us to probe ever deeper into the Universe. At Adrian College\, 110 South Madison Street\, 19:00 EDT. \nThe planetarium will also address light pollution\, a current issue affecting dark skies.

SUMMARY:Next Generation of Io Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this workshop is to bring together interdisciplinary scientists to discuss outstanding science questions about Io — the most volcanically active world in the Solar System\, yet fundamental questions persist regarding its origin\, evolution\, present-day activity\, dynamic atmosphere\, and its complex interactions with the rest of the Jovian system. Io’s extreme activity makes it an important analog for understanding processes relevant to the early Earth and Moon\, and other tidally heated bodies across the cosmos. \n

SUMMARY:Ground Control #3: Space and the A.I. Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Arnt-Børre Salberg is the guest at 17:00-20:00\, Mesh Youngstorget\, Møllergata 6\, Oslo. He and his team have built THOR since he gave a talk on artificial intelligence and Earth observation from space at Spaceport Norway in 2017. The Norwegian Computing Center was already well ahead in this research — but the field barely had an established name\, and few outside the lab had begun to understand what was coming. That talk set in motion a collaboration with ESA that is still running today. \nEight years later\, THOR is a foundation model for Earth observation that the Norwegian Space Agency describes as setting the standard within ESA. Trained on 22 terabytes of satellite data from four different Sentinel sensors\, built on one of Europe’s most powerful supercomputers\, and released as fully open source. The Norwegian Computing Center won the ESA tender in open competition against larger European players. \nWhere traditional AI required a separate model for every task — one for sea ice\, another for flood mapping\, another for snow cover — THOR works as a shared platform that can be rapidly adapted to new problems with far less data and computing power. It maps icebergs\, wetlands\, oil spills and vegetation. It enables near-real-time environmental monitoring. And it is available to anyone with basic Python skills and an interest in what satellites can see.
