First Asteroid Sample Retrieved by USA Set to Land in Utah Before Spacecraft Heads to Next TargetFollowing a mild trajectory correction via attitude control system thrusters, Origins-Spectral Interpretation-Resource Identification-Security-Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-Rex) is set to briefly enter Earth atmosphere at 08:42 MDT, dropping its return capsule containing >60 g of material collected from Bennu – a 490-m diameter C-type asteroid with 1.1955-year orbital periodicity and a high rating on the Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale. ‘Bennu’ is a reference to an ancient Egyptian bird-like deity, selected from a Planetary Society naming contest. Features on the asteroid carry IAU-designated names derived from mythical birds of various cultures including Huhuk Crater (Pawnee), Huginn Saxum (Norse) and Tlanuwa Regio (Cherokee). After being dropped over California, the return capsule is to land within a 58 x 14 km area of DoD Utah Test and Training Range. Meanwhile, the spacecraft will fire its main engines, heading back out to deep space and marking the beginning of the OSIRIS-APophis EXplorer (OSIRIS-APEX) mission segment led by Principal Investigator Daniella DellaGiustina, also of University of Arizona. Approved with the second round of New Horizons extended missions in April of 2022, OSIRIS-APEX will visit Apophis, an S-type asteroid 370 meters in diameter, also considered potentially hazardous, is expected to pass within 0.0002 AU of Earth in 2029. OSIRIS-APEX slated for April 21, 2029 Apophis arrival and will remain in orbit for ~18 months. India Builds on Success of Chandrayaan-3, Collaborates on Further Lunar Missions with USA, JapanIndia Space Program looks forward to multiple upcoming space events with Chandrayaan-3 lander on Moon attempting to awaken from hibernation on September 22, first crewed ISRO Gaganyaan orbital test planned for late 2024, and collaboration with both NASA and JAXA on joint lunar missions. With successful landing on lunar South Pole August 23, ISRO Vikram lander reports lunar soil thermal readings of 50° C at the surface, and -10° C at 80 mm. ISRO plans further lander/rover missions to Moon South Pole jointly with JAXA on Lunar Polar Exploration Mission (LUPEX), also known as Chandrayaan-4, slated for launch NET 2026.
