On October 10, 1967 the Outer Space Treaty went into effect – establishing the foundational legal framework for international space law and peaceful exploration.
Key Rules of the Treaty:
- No Weapons of Mass Destruction: Bans placing nuclear weapons or other destructive weapons in Earth’s orbit or on celestial bodies.
- Peaceful Use Only: Limits the use of the Moon and other space bodies strictly to peaceful purposes.
- No Territorial Claims: Prohibits any nation from claiming sovereignty or ownership over space or celestial bodies.
- Global Benefit: Declares that space exploration should be carried out for the benefit of all countries and humanity.
